Full program description

Overview

Magnetic particle testing is a method of nondestructive examination (NDE) that is used to detect discontinuities in products. This course introduces you to magnetic particle testing in the aerospace industry.

By the end of this course, you will be able to

  • Define magnetic particle testing
  • Understand the principles of magnetism
  • Define magnetic flux lines and leakage fields
  • Understand the relationship between electricity and magnetism
  • Describe the importance of electromagnets when performing magnetic particle examinations
  • List common properties of metals
  • List properties of cast and wrought ferromagnetic metals
  • Describe processing steps used to transform metal products into finished parts and the discontinuities they can cause
  • List the types of equipment and materials used in magnetic particle examination
  • Describe different types of field-testing devices used to ensure the accuracy of magnetic particle examination
  • Understand how light meters are used during magnetic particle examination
  • Explain how to prepare parts for magnetic particle examination
  • Describe the factors that are considered when selecting the proper technique to perform a magnetic particle examination
  • List the factors that are considered when selecting the type of current and calculating the amperage required to magnetize a part
  • Understand the contents of the ASTM E1444 standard
